“FULL STEAM-(IE) AHEAD FOR DRAMA GROUP”

Following on from their March 07 production of “An Evening of Three One-Act Plays”, Stewarton Drama Group are moving forward with plans for their final production of the season, a performance of Tony Roper’s classic Scottish comedy “The Steamie”.

The Steamie first premiered in 1987 in a much acclaimed theatre tour of Scotland by Wildcat Stage Productions, starring Elaine C. Smith, and Dorothy Paul, and the following year the play was made into a film for Scottish Television starring Eileen McCallum, Katy Murphy and Peter Mullan.

The Stewarton group will perform the play, complete with all the wonderful songs penned by Dave Anderson, in Stewarton’s Institute Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th May 2007.

This local performance of the play will also mark the 10th anniversary of the Group’s original award-winning production of The Steamie, which under the direction of founder Group member Ismay McKenzie, first played to packed houses in Stewarton in 1997 and went on to win three Scottish Community Drama Association awards – The Muir Shield and The Jack Ireland Trophy for the Winning Full-Length Play in Ayrshire, and The Clark Cup for the Winning Full-Length Play in the West of Scotland.

Now ten years on, the Group are reviving the ever popular play and are inviting potential new members who would be interested in getting involved either on stage or backstage to come along to an informal Read-Through of the play in their Premises in the Scout Building in Corsehillbank Street, next to the Tennis Courts at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 13. This will be a great chance to learn more about the play and the five loveable characters of Doreen, Magrit, Dolly, Mrs Culfeathers, and wash-house mechanic Andy. The Casting Night for the play will be held in the Premises at 7.30pm on Thursday, March 15.

Group President Caren McLean told Stewarton.org“We are thrilled to be tackling such a wonderful play for the second time and we hope this classic Scots comedy will be a real treat for our local audiences who have already been asking us for tickets! We’d really love to meet some new members on 13th + 15th March, and anyone who would like more information about how they can get involved in the production can contact our Secretary May Piggott on 01560 480115”

Tickets for the play, priced at £5 each, are on sale now at Stewarton Library, or pay at the door on the night.
