FOREWORD

The last few decades have seen many changes in Scotland but in places like Stewarton where the population has almost doubled  the  changes  have  been even greater. Therefore, this is a particularly opportune time for the long and varied history of Stewarton to be set down, so that this and future generations may know what life was like in the Stewarton of former times.

Alastair Barclay, who has undertaken this task, is especially qualified since he comes from a well-known Stewarton family and therefore learnt, at First hand, much that he has recorded, though of course he has supplemented that knowledge with the fruits of diligent research.
