The Avenue &
Avenue Street
Through the years
|
Avenue Square has changed little over the years compared to some of the towns streets, it is steeped in history. It began as a dirt track from the village to the Corsehill Castle (Not Ruinscraig). It's course was fairly straight all the way from High Street (See Map below) and evidence of it can still be seen today. Part of the Bowling Green, Tennis Courts and Scout Hall are built on it as well as the back garden of the John Knox Church Manse. When the Institute hall was built, Avenue Street as we know it today was created and plans were drawn up to make it the main thoroughfare into the town from Dunlop, however in the meantime the railway came to town and this is how Graham Terrace became a curved street leading to Corsehillbank Street. |
