Former Bakery Building

Affectionately known by many Stewartonians as "The Creamery" and once a major source of employment in the town, on Wednesday 23rd July 2004 the former Bakery building was deliberately set on fire, as you can see from the pictures below the fire gutted the building which had been left unsecured for months and was used as a deadly playground by local children until it was demolished. Today the site residential flats.

The Fire

Special thanks to Andrew McKenzie who supplied photo's of fire.

We received this email from  Vicky O'Dowd who's family owned the building for over 20 years:

Pictures of the bakery on the local issues are very disturbing. I was very sad to see the mess it was in as my dad and uncle ran it. At one time almost everyone in Stewarton and Dunlop knew someone who worked for riverside and it ran 54 vans to all over Ayrshire and Glasgow. Sad as my family were to see it destroyed, we are glad the eyesore and danger has finally been removed, but wonder how long it would have sat there if there hadn't been a fire?
