The Railway Station

A class 45 "peak" passes Stewarton at speed on the "Thames Clyde Express" Glasgow Central to London St Pancras Sunday service in February 1971. The station was closed to passenger services during this time.

New track was being laid on the down line in the form of continuously welded track and concrete sleepers (very new technology at the time) in preparation for the uplifting and permanent closure of the up line and associated platforms. This is also the reason why the train is on the wrong line.

Dr Beeching's legacy lives on!
