The Derailment

A new MKII carriage from the derailment on 6th November 1974

Damage to the side of the carriage was caused by it colliding with a tamper machine on the up line.

During the re-railing, one of the other coaches "ran away". Desperate attempts were made to halt the coach, scotches, ballast etc all to no avail, the coach disappeared from sight heading for Kilmarnock. It later derailed at a set of catch points before reaching Kilmarnock.
The re-railing crew on their return to the depot were greeted to the strains of

"The Runaway Train came over the hill"
