The night of Monday 26th February
2001 saw snow coupled with gael force winds sweep across south west
Scotland, one of the worst affected areas was Stewarton and Dunlop.
Although the snow was not particularly heavy the wind blew it from
exposed areas like fields allowing it to accumulate in sheltered
areas such behind hedges/walls and especially railway cuttings. This
is what happened when the first train of the day, the 0632 to
Glasgow came across at the pavilion cutting between Stewarton and
Dunlop with 120 people on board, it was several hours before the
train was dug out from the snow and the passengers released. |
