Corsehill Castle

By William Watt (1875 - 1950)

A write verse on Corsehill

And its ol' stane castle wa's

The home of ancient Cunninghams

Wha faught in feudal wars.

The ruins still can plain be seen

Of this historic pile

Which sheltered men of yeomen breed

in staunch old feudal style.

In feudal wars they oft time faught

And victories have won

And still the same old spirit

was handed to their sons.

But time has changed both men and state

The feudal wounds are healed

The Cunninghams retain the mark

Fork Over and the shield.

And long may Corsehill ruins stand

A mark of distant times

The link with bygone ages

And Lords of Stewarton.

And may they long the motto hold

Fork over and the shield

To part with this from Stewarton

Tis hope they never yield.

Historic notes are valued

As generations come

And these old Corsehill ruins

Will pass their history on.

And so will sure their motto

Fork over and the shield

Twill prove to them the cunning

Which their fathers well did weild.

This castle ruin once again

Can claim a Cunningham

Descendant of original stock

Superior of her lands.

And some respect he sure will give

This landmark of the past

And slight repair the ruins rare

That's caused by wind and blast.

And may the name of Cunningham

A section of the shire

Still hold its name for butter fame

And cheese made by their sires.
