THE SHIFTIN O' STEWARTON KIRK
BY W. W. WATT

Fower Stewarton worthies on the spree,

They met tae quell their drouth a wee,

On maitters money they discussed,

A Kirk set gleek they couldnae trust.

A gless or twa it did inspire,

An' raised their risen wrath tae ire,

An' on the spot they did resolve,

Tae pit it richt like ither folds.

Due east or west it maun be placed,

The Stewarton folks can't be disgraced,

"We'll set it richt it's in oor po'er,

We'll dae it just this very 'oor".

They sallied forth their plans complete,

Such strength you very seldom meet,

Tae corners each they did advance,

An' often at their progress glanced.

Their strength applied wi' micht an' main,

Their selfwilled object tae obtain,

Yin collapsed wi' over stress,

Nae fault tae him he did his best.

The ither three they had din weel,

They met tae view the prostrate cheil,

"Aye," he hiccuped, "you've din fine,

Just ease it aff ma coat-tails this time".

His tails released a' tae their taste,

Stewarton noo won't be disgraced,

The Kirks is sittin' noo in line,

"I tell you lauds, we meant it fine".

The Hercules wha did this deed,

Were of the rare aul' Stewarton breed,

An' still the natives grag an' blaw,

Samson wisnae in't ava.

There is nae tablet on the wa',

Commemorates this strength at a',

The generations pass it on,

An' parents strength tae sons are shown.

The Kirk yet gleet it's nae disgrace,

Time leaps honours on its face,

Four generations may it staun',

Tae cater for the Christian baun.
